Back in November 2024, we concluded that Richard had improved enough that I could leave him for a week and go to Los Angeles to see my siblings. I used to go once a year, but those travel plans were scuttled because of the pandemic and then he was injured. I had not seen them for 5 years.
Arranging the airplane tickets for the flight was an incredible exercise in frustration, which I won’t go into now. In any event, I got the tickets, boarded my flights in Springfield and Dallas/Fort Worth, and arrived on time in Los Angeles, where my lovely sister picked me up.
Wonderful things happened. My sister arranged a reunion with four of our first cousins – I have not seen them in a very long time – at least 10 years. My younger brother and his wife live across the street from my sister and have a lovely back yard, and so we met there. Our brother who moved to Idaho several years ago came too and stayed a couple of days. I honestly didn’t think I was going see him again for a very long time. We had an absolutely delightful time visiting with our cousins and each other. Lots of laughs and catching up on memories and congenial conversation.
And then, the day before I was scheduled to fly home, I was able to attend the court proceeding in which my niece and her husband legally adopted the toddler they fostered as an infant. Finding the words to express the joy of that event is difficult, so I am not going to try. Suffice to say it was the culmination of a wonderful trip.
And I am not sure why I have let so much time elapse between November and today. I find myself becoming increasingly distracted and somewhat forgetful and procrastinating more, which takes its toll. One of my cousins mentioned she enjoyed reading my blog. Not recently she hasn’t. I will try to do better.
