Rinse and spit?

This morning we awoke to a plugged bathroom sink. So Richard spent some time taking apart the pipes that comprise the “P trap” and running a snake down the plumbing and then… and then… he poured water down the pipe to see if was going to flow, and it all backed up into the bathtub.

So, then we had to go down to the basement, and after struggling to get through the opening into the crawl space, he was able to take the clean-out cap off and run a snake down the pipe from the bathtub drain. It came up with lots of hair and other disgusting stuff that I don’t want to go into detail about. So that was cleared.

But when he came back upstairs and began to look at the pipes from the sink,  what he found requires some thought. The pipes were lined with petrified toothpaste that he had to chip out with a screwdriver.

We were aware from things we have seen on the internet that toothpaste can cause problems. But the question remains…. How do we go about brushing our teeth without toothpaste going down the pipe? Spit into a bucket and throw it out the back door?
